Skill Map
Drawings
When starting the Skill Tree I studied old pirate maps and attempted to create a similar feel. It was decided a map style would be used. I tried to implement this within Photoshop but found using a fountain pen and drawing out the terrain worked much better.
From this I scanned the pages and used them as the basis for the the skill map.
Upgrades
When designing the layout of the skill tree, I had a couple ideas. The original idea was that you are unlocking paths on a map between cities. This however proved to be messy. I eventually settled on a similar concept where you connect upgrades by filling in ink between the them. Below are some of the symbols I made for skill tree.
This skill tree is populated dynamically. The widget takes in an array of upgrade objects and builds a tree. This made it possible to quickly add upgrades, and alter them without having to worry about layout.
Map Texture
I studied old and fictional maps to create the texture and layout the regions. I did all the art for except the compass, and I edited the Bugs from their original to fit the style of the map.
